From China to Ireland, A Takeaway Classic
First time making this one, and it was a good one! Usually the sort of gloriously dirty takeaway you’d associate with the Irish after a few too many beers, but this homemade version was surprisingly not too unhealthy considering what the authentic option normally looks like.
Glen and I somehow didn’t have one when we were in Dublin a few years ago, so we still need to try the proper thing. I’ve had a couple of good versions at PJ O’Brien’s in the city, though, and I have to say this one held its own!
The main event is really that curry gravy/sauce alongside crispy chips, chicken, capsicum and onions. I had some green beans that needed using, so they joined the party too. Made homemade chips in the air fryer, thinly sliced and breaded the chicken, then kept everything else fairly true to the takeaway version.
For the sauce, I made a relatively thin gravy and went in generously with the curry powder. Poured over the crispy chicken, chips and veg, it was an absolute treat.
I’m not entirely sure where Irish food ends and Chinese food begins with this dish, but it somehow works brilliantly. And anything designed to be eaten alongside a Guinness clearly understands its audience!
